Wisdom Knows No Age

We often look to those older than us for mentorship and inspiration. It feels natural — experience often brings wisdom.

But over the years, I’ve realised how easily we can overlook the insights of those younger, assuming that fewer years of life must mean less strength of character or depth of understanding. I’ve been guilty of that bias myself.

Yet lately, I’ve found myself surrounded by younger people who inspire me deeply — not only through their talent, but through their attitude, humility, and generosity.

The Ocean Has Its Own Way of Teaching

One of my greatest joys is staying fit through ocean kayaking (Surfski). The sea is my classroom: sometimes calm, sometimes wild — always honest. You can’t control the waves; you can only learn how to move with them.

This week, I had the privilege of training with Katerina Milova, European K1 Marathon Champion. Despite her incredible achievements, Katerina is humble, approachable, and always ready to help paddlers far less skilled than herself (like me!). She has a rare gift for explaining techniques so clearly that you instantly understand what to do — without ever feeling inadequate.

Paddling alongside her, surrounded by flying fish and leaping mackerel off the beautiful coastline of Madeira, reminded me that true mastery often shows itself through kindness and patience.

Learning From the Next Wave

When I think about who has influenced me most on my Surfski journey, Bernardo Leça Pereira is the first person who comes to mind. Although still very young, his impact on me has been deep and long-lasting.

His wisdom, determination, and discipline — combined with his humour and (not so 🙂) occasional cheekiness — have pushed me to go further, even when I felt I had nothing more to give. Watching how he approaches challenges with focus and grace has changed the way I think about training and perseverance.

Bernardo already has numerous international and world titles to his name and belongs among the best Surfski paddlers in the world, yet he remains humble and approachable. He always finds time to support others and constantly looks for ways to improve, both in sport and beyond — and that is truly inspiring to watch.

Leadership, Like the Ocean

The ocean constantly reminds me that strength without flexibility breaks — and that listening, balance, and humility are forms of power.

Thank you, Katerina and Bernardo, for showing me that inspiration knows no age. Watching you reach new heights while lifting those around you is a privilege — and a powerful reminder that leadership and wisdom, like the sea, have no fixed shape or age.
